First, we looked at race in video games. We found that while minorities are underrepresented in the industry overall, they are well-represented in some genres. For example, black characters make up nearly a third of all playable heroes in MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) games, and gay and lesbian characters are common in many different genres. However, there is still work to be done in terms of representation across the board.
Gender also plays a role in diversity within the video game industry. Females make up roughly half of all gamers worldwide, so it’s no surprise that many games offer female characters as protagonists or main antagonists. However, there is still a lot of room for improvement when it comes to gender diversity across the board – for example, only about one-fifth of all playable video game characters are female fighters.

We hope that by shining a spotlight on these issues and providing resources for developers and publishers, we can help make video game development more inclusive for everyone who wants to participate.
